3S-GTE, I think its just about time...but...

So my motor is kinda crapped out and from talking to my uncle and friends (who are mechanics too) and with over 200K miles, I've basically been told it would be cheaper to just get a new motor. either way I need to make up money because I can't afford the 3S-GTE or the 4-AFE...but what I was wondering was, how much would you say it would cost for me to get a 3S-GTE motor w/trans and say rebuild it before I drop it in? labor wise, my uncle and I could work on the motor, and swapping it in he can do and just use me as extra hands...so what do you think? thanks dr.tweak

Rebuild it before you put it in? For all the rebuild parts, plus having the head rebuilt (something a machine shop has to do), plus the machine work on the block, you're looking at around $1500 probably. Plus the engine itself.
I would just try to find a good 3SGTE and swap it in there without rebuilding.

Hmm...sounds like a better idea...another question, other than ebay and maybe finding some local junkyards are there any other places you would suggest looking for the 3S-GTE?

Junyards? 3sgte? I think that is a LOOOOOOOOONGshot!
Ebay or a company like Jarco. Shipping from them to a local freight place... expect about $150-200.

They seem to have a great rep from what I've heard. I bought my 20v 4age from Makoto_autoparts on ebay. Great deal and easy to deal with.

very difficult swap my friend.
I would say for the money and time, go for a 20V silvertop and go Megasquirt.
Very simple swap.
Everything should be around 3000.

Don't use the words "20v" "megasquirt" and "simple". Tweak will kill you. :p

Dr.Tweak once told me about the 20V and as difficult as it may be to do the 3S-GTE, as a rally fan I might kill myself if I don't do it, but thanks for the suggestions.

Far as I know, the 4age 20v uses the same tranny/axles/mounts as the engine you have in there already. The 3sgte... well, custom everything I believe.

DAMN IT...if only money was no object...at one point I was considering the 4AGE too...then said NOPE 3SGTE thats it!...now I'm back...maybe I'd be better off getting the 4AGE and trying to find a GT-Four in the future. That and considering my current situation...4AGE might be the way to go...either way I should be happy anyway right?

There's an Alltrac on ebay right now, lots of aftermarket parts, recent motor, huge stereo system... he's right near me here in MA.
And yes, anything over the 4afe you will love... trust me.

my friend with the MR2 is gonna get his 3sgte swap done
in a few weeks
his source the engine from this guy who is gonna perform the swap
and he said its directly import from japan..with low mileage
so rebuild might not be necessary...
it cost no more than $3k with tranny and everything
(bascially you can have the whole rear end of that car)

Right, $3000 for a half cut is about right. Probably the first gen motor though, which has a little less HP. Also never go by what they say for mileage. Strange how every motor imported from Japan has 40,000 on it...

Aaron,
as for your last two posts or so I got answers for you.
You can use the Alltrac engine as it is a 3sgte, but the tranny you can't. You can get a way with it using a Camry V6 tranny and axles if you want it for a FWD application. If you are using it in a MR2, the SW20 axles fit, you just need some custom fabrication.
As far as the engines from Japan being 40K or less, that is because the Japanese drivers are taxed heavily on older vehicles. I think it could probably be because of their strict emission laws or something else. All I know that for Japan it's just easier and CHEAPER to just use a car for 2-3yrs, junk it, and buy a new one.

So Dr.Tweak...how hard or easy would the 4AGE swap in my car? Would it be as easy as dropping another 4AFE in? and is there any custom work involved at all? Oh...and I just don't really know that much about the electronics and such but would my guages still be accurate or would I need to change my guages too?

new questions...I talked to my uncle and he asked something about the injectors being the same? If I get the 4AGE motor and tranny, what other things would I have to get and what would I be able to use off the 4AFE?

I am in the middle of a 4age swap into my 91 corolla. So far this is what I have done that was required for the swap. I bought just motor, trannie, and ecu for a 1000 for japan star motors off of ebay with free residential shipping
Modify the passenger motor mount. (removed the one on motor and put old 4afe mount on)
New headers, the 4afe will not fit.
Different radiator hoses.
The 16 pin connector from the body of the car to the 4afe ecu had to coverted into the 12 pin connector for the new 4age ecu. ( I have all part numbers from the toyota dealership if you may need them.)
Once the car is done the exhaust shop will have to add about 6in of pipe from the new header to the existing cat converter.
The trottle cable has to be swapped to a longer one. Since most 4age are right hand drives the trottle cable is going towards that direction. You will have to get a longer one to go to that side of the car. Dr. Tweak informed me that a mid paseo trottle cable should work.
Dr. Tweak is converting the rest of my wiring harness as we speak.
Others modifications not really needed.
Fidranza Flywheel
AEM fuel filter
new hoses
new cv axles
new motor mounts
aftermarker radiator
new belts
After all is said and done I will have spent almost 3K on this swap and got performance parts as well.
This complete swap doesn't take long as long as you have everything right there and know how to do most of the work. I am doing all labor myself except for the exhaust and the merge of the two wiring harnesses.
The half cut is a really good idea but also twice the price. It would have really help with all the little stuff like the trottle cable and the 12 pin connector.
Good Luck

Hay, if you are looking for a good 3S-GTE motor. I have one I'm taking out of my MR2 to replace with something ells (shush, it's a semi secret what’s going in). At any rate, it's an SW20 setup but it's essentially a complete motor from air filter to the end of the down pipe (-IC, but wrong type for you anyways), Includes ECU and uncut harness, trans and axils. I'm sure you could trade some one the SW20 trans for the appropriate Celica trans. As far as the harness do a little re-routing to get it headed back to the cabin. It's here in Mass and runs grate. You welcome to come have a look before I do my swap if you are interested.
At least it's a known running motor, I can save you shipping depending how far away you are and I will give you a good deal.

Yea, from what I've been able to find...my motor just needs the valve cover gasket (thank god) and I should be good for a while. Otherwise I really dont have the money for a new motor, but thanks anyway...I wish I could but I just can't afford it yet. :brick:
