Question about ABS?

Hey Dr. Tweak,

I have a quick question.  If my car has ABS, and I have seen the ABS unit under the hood, and the light isn't on.  Shouldn't it work.  My car is a 93 240SX.  In this snow storm, I was just testing out my car, and just out of curiousity, I slammed the brake pedal, and the ABS didn't work, the tires just locked up.  What could be wrong?

If you have performance tires on, that will happen, or if your on ice.

well 2 urs ago i was going down a hill in da snow and it wouldnt stop until i saw the abs light up and the car came to a dead stop. but i havent seen that light turn on ever again.

when u turn the car on do u see the abs light up if not might be a fuse maybe?

yeah im gonna have to look into it...im really not sure whats up with the thing, but to have it work would be nice

my car has the ABS on it and the only time my ABS light came on was when my rear lights were out. i've tried slamming on the brakes and they have never locked up on me and the car stops just fine without the abs light coming on. i never knew the light had to be on when the system was working. i always thought that the abs is always on and the light was to indicate a fail in the system or something. also when i was in alaska i had to slam on my brakes for something and the tires locked up but that was because the road was a bit icy andi had snow tires with studs.
