hey guys well today i felt like experimenting with a 01 celica gt intake manifold and ThrottleBody on my 99 corolla. first right of the bat the 99 1zz has 3 sensors on the TB and the 01 1zz has only 2. the third sensor is a vaccum sensor placed on top of the 99 1zz TB.  either way i decided to go ahead with this to see what will happen. so we started to remove the 99 intake manifold and TB and we noticed some black sticky stuff on the intake ports on the head and manifold. so we cleaned them out after realizing where it came from. we installed the 01 plastic intake manifold which needed the top radiator hose removed and the air compressor pushed forward as well.  we got the intake on and the new TB on as well and man it looked awesome. we connected all the hoses and the 2 sensors (TB position and some type of temp sensor). now before we started the car i took a hose that came off of the intake manifold as a vaccum line and connected it to the vaccum sensor. so we started the car everything went well on start up (i.e. no engine lights or whatever) but after about 2 minutes of running we noticed the the car was running to high at about 1600rpms. we tried to figure out what was wrong but i was running low on time so we swapped back the original intake system. i figure it might be a vaccum problem but i couldnt really figure out where. i wasnt sure if the vaccum sensor needed more air or if there was a leak somewhere. man i really wanted to keep that intake in place it look so good and it would have been real nice getting more air in there especially with the 2.25" exhaust system. has anybody tried this before?

PM Vamp over @ Toyrolla.com... He had the same setup once. Let him know what you did and what the problem was. He might be able to help you...

I have not done it, but I also have a 'black' intake with a TB in my basement; to try in my '99 at some point.

Did you use a black rubber gasket with your new intake?
Also, TB needs one also.
Did you unplug the battery to reset the computer?

yeah i had the rubber gasket on both the intake and TB. and i also had the neg. battery terminal disconnected. i cant figure it out. although while talking to my friend (he built up a 12 sec GTP) and he was telling about how sometimes when going to a bigger size TB the computer might need anywhere from 5-30 minutes to adjust and more in likely i might need to adjust air and fuel. he also might bring me his stock injectors which are about 420cc. although i have a 01 celica 1zz motor waiting for an overhaul i think i might go with just overhauling my non vvti 1zz and adding a t3 turbo and stage 2 FI cams since i keep on hearing about people having issues with the vvti with the turbos and cams. i keep on going back and forth about it but i guess once i'll have the money i'll make up my mind!

Have similar plans also, just got a bigger fuel rail and trying to get some 370 or 440cc injectors with a 190 or 255lph pump.

Have read that our long run tube alum. intakes are better for low RMP performance over the new 'black' intakes the new 1ZZs have; something to do with more even air flow with less turbulance providing better responce in low RPM range; not sure this rule applies to forced air.

T3 is big IMO, I like the GT25R or GT28R for street use.

what are the specs on the turbos your interested in? i also emailed crower cams, to see if the set of 1zz cams that they have will fit a non vvt-i 1zz and he emailed me back saying "yes they are VVT-i" so i asked for clarification. i had also asked if they can make a custom spec with their FI specs or if worst case scenerio,  i also asked how much was a regrind on our stock cams.

edit

i received an email from crower cams asking me to send them a set of non vvt-i cams for research just to see if the cams they sell are the same and i guess to see what else they can do.

Looking at some GT25 and GT28 here:

I don't have plans to build-up internals at all, too expensive.
