So today I got started on aaron7's MR2. The first step is putting together the engine management system. Today I put together the Megasquirt simulator board. Here are some pics for you all:

It's a full standalone.
Next will be making some modifications to the board to run the EDIS system and putting the harness together. Then I'll swap out engine and start hooking things up...

The parts usually run somewhere around $200-$300 depending on what you get, then the assembly of course which I charge another $200.
As for the gains, you can get quite a bit more power out of the 20v series with a standalone for whatever reason, but typically you can't beat stock programming on a stock engine. The reason for a standalone is that when you do serious modifications you can program the ECU for it. This ECU will run the engine very good, and then when Aaron wants to go turbo, he doesn't need to change a thing on the ECU. It's turbo-ready. (Just needs to be programmed and tuned of course).
The other time to use a standalone is when it isn't feasible to get ahold of the stock ECU and/or ignition system. This is one of the reasons why Aaron chose the MSnEDIS, we didn't have either the stock ECU OR the stock ignition system and the whole system is going to cost him about the same as what the stock stuff would have, so it was a good move on his part (especially since he want to do some serious mods in the future).

Yeah, my 20v mr2 is getting the stock ECU. A nice harness and ECU came w/ engine, and I'm keeping this baby stock so it can run those long toyota years with some nice synthetic oil. Of course that doesn't mean it wont have fun along the way

oh ok i was just wondering cuz i was looking at either camcon or emanage for my 1zz setup but with camcon the guys at importtuner mag got about 10hp to the wheels off of a mr2 i think the total was about 133hp give or take (i dont remember the exact number) but of course it had a cold air intake and something else that really didnt increase the power that much. but if the megasquirt system proves to give just as or more power i might go with the megasquirt

If you are looking to squeeze a little more power out of your 1zz, Iwould usggest a PowerFC or something like that. A MegaSquirt is kinda overkill!

cool but i'm rebuilding (slowly) a vvt-i 1zz for my 99 corolla. and hopefully it will be a real strong engine with some impressive numbers. i'll have to see what will be better for my setup cuz of course i want the most power out of it.

Why not drop in a 2zz if you plan on going standalone engine management anyways?

Oh god ... brings back memories of last summer trying to yank the 16v out of the mr2 in my friends garage.
Had a sweet blown headgasket so that nice soupy mix of oil and coolant was running all over me and the floor. Dont you love how it bumps against everything in the engine bay before you can actually drop it out?
What's your plan of action for his c56? Got precision-drilling skillz ?
Have fun with that

I did the modification to the MS board to use the EDIS system and downloaded the needed firmware, and I've been working on the wiring. Tomorrow I'll be doing some work to get the engine mounted in the car (precision drilling time
)

Last week I converted the Silvertop's C56 tranny so that it would work with the MR2 linkage.

Normally the C52 doesn't have that problem, you'll be all set with thisnew tranny.

So I've heard. Maybe mine was replaced or something at some time.
Was the tranny with the issue the C50?
Lastly, how's Logan's MR2 coming? Is it almost my turn again? haha

Yours is still in the shop, I don't have room in there until yours is out so first I have to at least get your engine mounted and put the wheels back on the 2 so I can roll it around

I think the c50's have "5th gear popout" not sure about c52's but I know the c56s dont!! If your engine needs to be mounted first then he's gotta finish the tranny then mount clutch and flywheel and then mount tranny to engine, probably change any belts or seals and THEN he will mount it in bay. But thats just from my experience.

Wish I had found this sooner! I'm getting an ACT Extreme plate and clutch and a lightened flywheel for the car. Not sure if it will make it up there before he assembles the motor...

doc, it seems frivolous to be thinking about this in the midst of so many problems, but do you notice those "stains", on my rear bumper and on the triangle pieces on the left and right of my engine bay that connect the verticle back part of the Cabin to the horizontal body of the car around the engine bay? I think it is simple green left over too long, do you know how to get rid of it? I haven't waxxed or washed car yet (stupid to do during engine swap) but I dont know if that will get rid of it. Any ideas appreciated.
heres the gear ratios :
C52 [ 3.166 ] [ 1.904 ] [ 1.310 ] [ 0.969 ] [ 0.815 ] /R [ 3.250 ] EP82 (turbo), AE92 - AE101 previous term, AE111 (4A-FE)
C56 [ 3.166 ] [ 1.904 ] [ 1.392 ] [ 1.031 ] [ 0.815 ] /R [ 3.250 ] AE101 latter-term - AE111 previous term, EP91 (turbo)

Logan,
I'll take a look at it, I didn't notice.
This week I had to do a wiring harness for a friend that I promised a long time ago, that's all done (got it done in 8 hours WOOT), and next week I am going to Maryland to get Darkchyld's Corolla. But I'll be working on Logan's MR2 probably tomorrow and maybe on Monday too, and then when I get back from MD I'll bang it out in no time. Then back to yours haha!

Yeah I'll be making a thread on Logans car very soon. Today, it moved out of the garage under it's own power.
Next week I'm back to yours and there's NOTHING that I have in the way, it's all you until it's done!
Speaking of which, are you planning on running this baby in the wintertime?

If that means I don't have to stress about finishing the car until the snow starts to melt, then yeah, I'll keep it in a nice, warm, dry garage all winter and tinker on it. I'll just move it out to work on my own vehicles for a couple hours at a time and then stick it back in there. That'll be perfect.
Now I just need to get the engine out of Mark's clip so that I have room!!! HAHA

Sweet.
I'll still probably bang it out in short order, but I can keep it here anyway. It will be out on the roads on dry, clear days for tuning of course

Would you be interested on some MAGNUM crossed drilled rotors? I bought a set by mistake. I also have one OEM rotor that was just sitting in my trunk. If you are interested, e-mail me @:
gusto395@optonline.net
BTW, they are made in CANADA with CANADIAN steel. I paid $95.00 for the set, don't woryy the price is no way near what I paid for them. Just e-mail me if interested on the set plus one OEM.
Thanks,
