Starting tomorrow is Alex's 4EFTE Tercel swap. The car is a '94 with the 3EE engine, 1.5 liter making like 80hp or something like that.

The engine is a 4EFTE from the Japanese Toyota Starlet GT. It is a 1.3 Turbocharged engine making 135hp and 115ft/lbs. It is quite east to upgrade this engine and get it near the 200hp mark.

This job is going to be a lot easier than Mantis!

Sweet, i once got a chance to meet a guy from Division 1 performance who had a suped up Tercel a few years ago, that thing was amazing. Its a pretty good read.

I'm anxious to see how this swap turns out.. Tercels are sick when suped up..

Actually, that's an interesting story. Alex originally bought the engine/tranny because his auto tranny went in his Corolla. (This 4EFTE has an auto tranny with it). When he found out that it wasn't the best option (or a direct swap) for the Corolla, we were trying to sell it. No one picked it up so he just bought a Tercel with a questionable engine for cheap and he's getting the swap done himself.

Then we'll do the 4AGZE swap in the Corolla which will be the next project.

So, short answer, we're using the 4EFTE automatic.

All that work and they kept the 3EE... a 4EFTE would have been such a better platform to start with! Oh well...

Hey, I was wondering if anyone would help me in a engine swap.  I'm not very knowledgeable in doing engine swaps although I did help people do some swaps.  I'm planning on pulling out my 3.0 turbo engine (7MGTE) in the supra and dropping in the 2.5 twin turbo engine (1JZGTE) into my car.  Of course I'm going to need to get everything like the ECU, Wiring Harness, Tranny...

When we got this car, the engine wasn't running right. In fact, it would barely run for me at all.

Gee, I wonder why:

Packed FULL! It's a wonder the engine could get any air!

Here's the engine seperated from all but a couple last items, I'll pull it first thing in the morning.

Then I'll start (and maybe finish) the wiring.

One thing about this swap, I really got spoiled working on Mantis because there was NO rust at all... this thing is really rusty, I snapped a couple bolts today, and broke one tool.  :brick:

I wouldn't be suprised at all if that's exactly what happened.

So the reason that the engine didn't come out yesterday is because the speedometer cable was rusted and wouldn't come off. I worked on it this morning and got it loose. Then I pulled the engine. It's a tight squeeze through that Tercel engine bay!

Landed:

Empty engine bay:

And the usual wiring fun!

The wiring is less complex than with Mantis, but there's a lot more wiring in the harness because with the older Toyotas they put a whole bunch of stuff into the engine harness that doesn't have to do with the engine, so they have to be sorted out. All of the engine wiring is done, it's just the rest that needs to be sorted out.

Hey all, it's been a while since I made an update. Reason being that I was on vacation as you all know, then I was sick last week so I'm running a week behind right now. Anyways I got cracking on it the past couple days and made quite a bit of progress on the wiring.

What's throwing me a curve right now is that the tranny is electronically controlled, and there are some wires coming from it which are NOT on the engine diagrams and since the car is from Japan, I can't get the diagrams for the tranny! So.... I'm having some fun with that. Other than some of those trouble items, all of the engine wiring is done. I've got to work out some things and then I'll try to fire it up next week.

Anyways, enough talking, here's the pics!

4EFTE installed:

Another shot showing some of the wiring:

And the interior with some wiring showing:

Still working on it. I got the neutral start switch right, but I'm still working on the rest...

Today I put in about 5 hours and I got the engine all hooked up. The engine is cranking but not starting, it's a wiring issue that I will sort out on Wednesday.

I also filled the engine (obviously), primed it, filled the tranny, and installed the axles. The car is back on it's wheels now.

Woot!

I spent some hours last night looking over the diagrams, realized my mistake, and went out to the garage to fix it as soon as I got home. Traced a couple circuts and swapped a few wires, and bam! She fired right up.

I still have to sort out a couple minor bugs, and then I'll test out the tranny Smiley

Hey Dr.Tweak, how would a 4AGZE fit into a AE102 Corolla? How long will it take you to do a complete ECU, ENGINE, TRANNY, INTERCOOLERon a 1993 AE102 Corolla? Of course minus any problems  and custom parts take? I was told that it's a pretty quick swap, almost bolt on since it shares the same size block and motor mounts.  Smiley

Yeap, not a bad swap. Assuming that your car is a 5-speed and that you'll be using the stock 5-speed tranny, (the tranny that comes with the GZE is very good but you can't get axles for them in the US), then it's a matter of wiring and intercooler piping. It would take about 12 days, working two days a week that's 6 weeks.

The cost will be about $2000 for the parts plus $800 for the install. $2800 including all your intercooler piping and intercooler.

If you're serious, hit me up at drtweak@phoenixtuning.com

Also there's an update on the Tercel project coming in a few minutes.

Install is done, wiring is done and loomed. I need to install the grill, take a peice of the hood support out (for the intercooler), and put the interior back together. And install an O/D switch.

Oh and get the exhaust done.

Actually mine is still an AUTO, I have a manual tranny and all of the parts needed to convert it to manual. So I guess I would have to do that conversion first.   I figure the GZE axels can be custom made or ordered from JAPAN or AUSTRALIA. Have to get them first. The front cut would be a better way of getting all the parts you need.

That conversion is easy to do while the engine's out, so we might as well do it at the same time.

Yeah, you should have no worries about him doing your swap.  He knows what he is doing and I trust him more then anyone else for when I get the work done to my car.  Smiley    I am sure you will be just as happy as Jerry on his '98 Rolla VE to '98 Rolla XRS,

I can tell that by the pictures that Dr.Tweak posted , he is surely a professional at his best. He knows TOYOTAS better than any person I know. I am confident that he will do a GREAT swap! I believe that he is right for me to do the AUTO to MANUAL conversion when we do the swap, while the engine is out of the car.

What is the difference on the two different 4AGZE engines, one is a 165hp and the other is 170hp. Also one is a MAP and the other is AFM? Hey, dock what is the big difference and which one would you put in your vehicle if you had a choice? I know the one that is 170hp has a bigger supercharger pulley, giving the supercharger a 12 psi, whereas the smaller pulley is 10psi?HuhHuh? :tellme:

It depends on where the pulley is. A smaller pulley on the supercharger will have the same effect as a larger pulley on the crank. (Spins it faster)

The map sensored 4AGZE is the newer one, so that is generally the better choice. It's also more expensive usually, and to be honest, the difference isn't worth the money. Once you start modding it, the difference goes away.

Just make sure you get a 4AGZE from the LEVIN, not the USDM MR2!

Aaron, good to see you here bud. Head over to the General Discussion area and introduce yourself, you'll find everyone here to be nice and inviting (except for LAZ, look out for him).

I'm in the process of either dropping a 4efte into my old 92 or putting another 5efe into it.  Would you be willing to do just the wiring harness for the 4efte?  I'm in virginia so the swap has to be done here, ive done one before but the wiring harness is all i'm worried about.

Yeah that's not a problem, I'm actually running a special right now on that harness, $300 plus shipping ($30). Email me at drtweak@phoenixtuning.com and we'll set it up.
