I just came back from the Nissan dealership dropping off the Altima to get a 15K mile service. I have been going to this dealership a long time (more than 3+ years) to get service, and besides getting a new cute service advisor called May the girl tells me that on top of the $299 15K service she strongly recommends, and stops short of telling me that it is required, that I should perform a Power-Flush to the engine to avoid sludge. Now I ask her that probably that service is something recommended for older cars that do not get their oil changed regularly, and that I have never done that in the past, and she tells me that no, it is recommended for every car that goes through their service department and that has between 12K to 15K miles and gets regular oil changes. I ask how much it is for the Power-Flush, ans she tells me it is $109.95 on top of the $299  8O She continues to tell me that I should really do it, or else risk the danger of having sludge built up in my engine. I once again decline, and she just gives me some literature and tells me to read it over, that it may change my mind.

Now I know all about sludge, and how some V6 toyotas are prone to it if you don't change the oil regularly, but I can see if someone that has not done any reading would pony up the $109.95 plus tax on the service advisor's recommendation and do this to their car. My guess is that they just got this new toy, and they are looking to make some money. This is the company that makes the machine and products:

Now not once in my many years of owning cars and bringing them to the dealer for service have I ever had anyone tell me that this is a good thing to do. What do you all think? Was she looking to make a few bucks more, or is this a legitimate service to extend the life of the engine? I tell you May and her cute nose diamond stud almost had me convinced, NOT!   I just started thinking how many other things she could flush on me for $109.95!    :-P

What do you all think?

There are alternatives for engine flush service that don't require your to pay an arm and a leg for the service (and subsidize the cost of the machine). There are service centers that offer flush services that don't require a machine. Mega Power International makes a gallon jug flush service which that professional technicians really like. I don't know what area you live in, but you can check www.megapower.com for a listing of distributors and find a service center who uses their product.
