Hey guys I need some help. I hooked up my intake about 3 weeks ago (SRI) and now all of a sudden my check engine light comes on and the car starts to hesitate. If I reset the ECU it is fine for about 20 mins or so before it starts again. Weird thing, today when I got to work I opened the hood while the car was running and squeazed the rubber connector that attaches the intake to the car and the car stalled right away. I tried this twice to make sure it wasn't a coinsidence and it wasn't. I checked everything and all is tight and attached. Do you think the MAF sensor is bad??? And how would anyone explain the stalling when I touch the rubber piece??

Crazy please help

Sounds like an air flow problem to me. It's possible your engine and MAF sensor are not getting enough air. Make sure nothing is kinked and is your filter new? It could be clogged with dirt and debris... When squeezing that plastic piece, your basically robbing the engine of air therefore sufficating it...

Will do guys Ill take pics when I get home around 5pm. No I wasnt squeazing the vacumm line it was the maint rubber that attaches the intake tube to the throttle body and you can't squeaze it much, thats why I thought it was weird.

Skills, the filter is new.

Is it possible that maybe there is a leak or hole in one of the seals?? would that even cause any problems?

This is just frustrating Sad

I just thought of something. You know how the SRI have the mounting bracket on the bottom? well when I first hooked it up I didnt mount that like a dumbass. The car ran like a dream for 2 weeks. Then one day I decided to see if that bracket would reach, it was close I had to really pull the intake over and guess what my DUMBASS didn't losen the clamps when I pulled it. I bet you I ripped the rubber connector, sleeve, gromet or whatever its called when I did that and to much air is sucking in after the MAF sensr right into the engine causing it to stall. That would also explain why it stalled when I grabbed it, I probably opened the rip up and it stalled right away.

Well it does add up and makes sense so I will let you guys know when I get home.

This is all Ive been able to think about all day long Sad

Ok I took it all apart and re-did it. Reset the ECU and all.

Still doing it. Check engine came right on and it hesitates like crazy as soon as you give it any gas even when your out of gear just revin.

I guess I have to reinstall the stock intake tomorrow.

damn im upset about this. It is pretty much non-drivable

What brand of SRI is it?

I found a post on MO that some guy was hiving a similar issue with his intake, and they post some good suggestions:

http://www.matrixowners.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=279238

Also if you have a code or a way to read the code for teh CEL it would be great.

Thnx for that link laz but after reading that it soulds like he only had a cel come on and no hesitation. I have an Ebay SRI not a CAI and it only has the one vacumm line. I don't have a code because it runs so bad I can't really drive it far. I will put on the stock air box and see if the cell is still there & if it is to the dealer I go.

oh man, if it is a ebay filter that you are using they I suggest that yo uspend a couple of bucks and get yourself a K&N from the auto parts store. I read on another forum someone using the ebay filter and it ripping after a few days. Not only ripping, but the top cover coming loose and going into his intake gettin stuck in his throttle body!

Anyway, if the SRI looks good, and the rubber coupler looks good, then I say the filter is the suspect.

If you know someone with a K&N maybe you can borrow it for a minute.

Ok folks, the stock intake is back on ( correctly) and it is still there. CEL is one and when I rev the engine it revs then stops then revs then stops.

Thats the best way i can describe it. Either way I guess ill drive to the dealer tomorrow. I put money it's the MAF sensor.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor? Ok, I think one theory might be that the ebay filter may not be as good, and in the time you had it on it let more dirt in and made it dirty? They suggest to buy some throttle body cleaner and not carb choke cleaner to clean the sensor. Never use WD40 since it leaves an oily residue.

Good luck.

Her eis a link that describes how to clean it. Even though it is on a toyota tacoma, the principle is the same:

www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/tacoma_4runner_30k/maintenancep5.html#maf

BTW these people recommend using an electronic cleaner like the ones found at radio shack. Some of them also argue that the oils in filters like K&N may mess up the MAF sensor by gettin git dirty, and it is a good possibility that if teh MAF sensor is not reading the airflow correctly that it will make the car hesitate.

Let us know man, and if you have a digi camera take some pics as well.

Ok it is out of the shop now. The MAF sensor was fried. The only thing it could have been was the cheap ebay filter.

I am going to pic up a good filter before I re-install it Smiley

Thanks for your help guys Smiley

Good deal man! I guess you got t replaced under warranty? I think most of the times those cheap ebay filters are are the culprit of everything!

Anyway get yourself a good K&N filter and you should be good. I had mine for more thatn a year and it never gave me any problems.

Well when I looked at my E-bay filter I realized that the whole top of it was just a screen. Don't see how that filters anything Smiley

Maybe yours was a little different but this one I should have just left it off and it would have been the same amount of filtration LOL
